Russia launched its special military operation in Ukraine in February, after the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR) appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian attacks.
On Sunday, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that the Lugansk People's Republic had been entirely liberated as Ukrainian armed forces retreated from the strategic city of Lisichansk.
The liberation of the Donbass republics is one of the key goals of Moscow's special operation that was launched by the Russian president in late February this year.

Top Ukrainian Diplomat Says NATO Unlikely to Change Position on Kiev Membership
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Monday that he does not yet see any prerequisites for NATO changing its policy on the country’s membership.
"I do not see any preconditions for the alliance to change its practical policy on Ukraine's membership. I expect NATO to continue confirming in the near future that the doors are open and the decision of the Bucharest summit remains in force. Ukraine also remains on the track of Euro-Atlantic integration and I do not see the potential for NATO to change its position in the short term," Kuleba said in an interview with Levyy Bereg media outlet.
In December 2014, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine amended two laws by renouncing the non-aligned status of the state. In February 2019, the Ukrainian parliament adopted constitutional amendments which signaled the country's commitment to integration into the EU and NATO.
Washington officials have said that the possibility of Ukraine’s entry into NATO is not being considered at this stage. At the same time, the United States emphasized that the alliance would never abandon the "open door" policy and did not rule out Kiev may join NATO in the future.

Muscovites Choose Territory Near UK Embassy to Be Named After Lugansk People's Republic
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - The territory in front of the British embassy in Moscow will be named after the Lugansk People's Republic, the Moscow authorities said on Monday based on the results of an online poll among Muscovites.
Voting on which territory in Moscow should be named as Lugansk People's Republic Square took place as part of the Active Citizen project on Monday. Muscovites had the options of giving their preference to the area close to the British embassy, the area next to the German consulate or the territory between the Lithuanian and Belgian embassies.
Over 109,000 citizens took part in the poll. Some 56% of the votes were in favor of naming as Lugansk People's Republic Square the area near the British embassy. Over 13% voted for the territory between the embassies of Lithuania and Belgium, while about 10% of respondents spoke in favor of the territory next to the German consulate. Almost 19% of respondents said the naming should be up to experts.
In early June, Muscovites chose the name for the square near the US embassy, with the option the Square of the Donetsk People's Republic receiving the highest number of votes.

Lavrov: Russian Embassy in Bulgaria Unable to Work Normally After Russian Diplomats Expulsion
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, commenting on Sofia's decision to expel 70 employees of the Russian embassy, that Moscow would respond to these actions, and that the Russian embassy was unable to work normally after it.

"According to our assessment, according to the assessment of the foreign ministry, the embassy is not able to work normally, in fact almost from now on. Naturally, we will reciprocate our Bulgarian colleagues," Lavrov said during a press conference in Moscow.

Lavrov said that the decision to expel 70 employees of the Russian embassy in Bulgaria was due to Washington's pressure on Sofia.

"This is not an independent decision of the acting prime minister, who has an absolutely open and unequivocal pro-US orientation, is ready to fulfill any wishes of his sovereign," the minister said.

He explained that "the wishes of the sovereign are to kill the historical memory in the Bulgarians, to destroy the foundation of relations that have been hardened in the joint struggle for independence, and in many other situations, including in recent history."

"Washington's policy applies not only to Bulgaria, they want to kill the historical memory of other peoples in the Balkans, first of all, the Orthodox peoples, by the way," the minister added.

According to Lavrov, even in Bulgaria itself the decision was taken "by the country's leadership with surprise."

Lavrov noted that this decision "did not rely on the procedures established in Bulgaria for such abrupt movements."

Death Toll From Ukrainian Strike in Russia's Belgorod Rises to 5 - Family
The death toll from the Ukrainian air strike in the Russian city of Belgorod has grown to five as bodies of two more members of the same family had been found, their relative told Sputnik on Monday.

Ukraine targeted Belgorod's residential area with three Tochka-U missiles, equipped with cluster warheads, on Saturday night. All three missiles were intercepted and destroyed in the air by Russian air defense systems, but fragments of one of the Ukrainian missiles fell on an inhabited house.

"Oleg, his first wife Olga, their two children — a daughter aged 22 and a son who would have turned 16 in August — and Olga's mother," a member of family said.

The bodies of the latter two were found on Sunday evening, she said.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov initially said there were four people killed and four others injured, including a child, as a result of the strike. The Russian investigative agency, in turn, said there were three people killed and two missing, including a child.
