Ex-Japanese PM Shinzo Abe In 'Very Grave Condition' After Shooting, Fumio Kishida Says
05:52 GMT 08.07.2022 (Updated: 08:56 GMT 08.07.2022) Japanese media reported on Friday that an unknown assailant had attacked and injured the country’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his speech in the city of Nara earlier in the day.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has stated that the country’s former PM Shinzo Abe is in a “very grave condition” after shooting.
“I am praying from my heart that Abe survives this ordeal,” Kishida told reporters, describing the shooting as "absolutely unforgivable.”
The statement comes amid reports that the man suspected of shooting Abe said that he had been dissatisfied with the former PM and wanted to kill him.
Earlier on Friday, the Japanese news agency Kyodo reported that Abe shows no signs of life and that the country’s prime minister’s office established a crisis center following the attack on the former PM.
The attack occurred at around 11:30 a.m. local time (02:30 GMT). Abe was shot during his speech in the western Japanese city of Nara and was subsequently taken to the Nara Medical University hospital, where he arrived in an unconscious state.
“Yes, the ex-prime minister has already been delivered. We will refrain from commenting on his condition,” a hospital official told a Sputnik correspondent.
According to Japanese media, citing law enforcement officials and government sources, Abe was shot from behind and sustained injuries in the chest. The doctors carried out a closed-chest cardiac massage. At the same time, some other media reported that Abe was bleeding in the neck area.
Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, was detained at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder, the police said, as cited by Kyodo. The suspect reportedly offered no resistance at the time of the apprehension.
