The global supply of food and fertilizers needed to grow crops was disrupted by the introduction of anti-Russia sanctions by western countries. The economic measures impeded the ability of Russia, one of the biggest global suppliers of both, to ship these goods and conduct related financial transactions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and the head of Mali's transitional government Assimi Goïta discussed potential cooperation between the two countries, including possible shipments of food, fertilizers and fuel from Russia to the African state.
"It was agreed that the relevant Russian and Malian agencies will intensify practical cooperation in this sphere," the Kremlin's press service added.
Goïta, in turn, expressed gratitude to Putin for Russia's aid to Mali in various spheres. Separately, he noted the two countries' cooperation in foreign policy matters and their joint work in the UN.
The Mali interim president also shared information about the country's fight against terrorist groups in its territory with Putin. Goïta stressed that the government's efforts look to stabilize the situation in the country and wage an "uncompromising fight" against terrorists.
