The DPR and LPR proclaimed their independence from Ukraine in 2014 after holding self-determination referenda.
In February 2022, Russia recognized the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk, and launched a military operation in Ukraine in response to calls for help from the republics, which have been constantly targeted by Ukrainian shelling.
In response, the West and its allies have rolled out a comprehensive sanctions campaign against Moscow.
The DPR and LPR are recognized by Abkhazia and South Ossetia, as well as Syria and North Korea.

Ukrainian Troops’ Attack on Energodar Repelled - Regional Authorities
Ukrainian troops have stopped shelling the city of Energodar, located less than two miles from the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP), Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the regional military-civil administration, told Sputnik.
Late on Friday night, Rogov said on Telegram that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant had been shelled by Ukrainian troops and that a power line was damaged. He told Sputnik that the ZNPP continued to operate as usual, there was no critical damage and the radiation levels were normal. According to Rogov, Enerhodar was also shelled overnight and multiple explosions were heard in the city.
"As of now, the firing has stopped. Everything is calm in the city. The attack was repelled. According to preliminary information, they [Ukrainian forces] targeted the coastal strip and the industrial zone," Rogov told Sputnik in the early hours of Saturday.
He added that there has been no information on any casualties or damage.
According to Rogov, Ukrainian troops have intensified attacks on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant ahead of the results of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) inspection of the plant. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, who visited the plant earlier this week, is expected to present a report to the agency's board of governors on the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP early next week.

Kiev Authorities Made Unsuccessful Attempt to Land Their Paratroopers in Zaporozhye Region, They Were Rebuffed - Authorities to Sputnik
Kiev authorities have made an unsuccessful attempt to have Ukrainian paratroopers land in the Zaporozhye region, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the regional military-civil administration, told Sputnik.
Rogov said on Telegram late on Friday night that at least two dozen high-speed boats with a large number of armed people had reportedly moved down the Dnieper river from the area of the Kakhovka reservoir, not far from the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
"The Kiev regime deployed several dozen boats with militants to land in the Zaporozhye region in three directions: Vasilievka, Dneproprudnoye and Energodar. There is no logical explanation for such actions. All this was more like an imitation of violent activity on the eve of a meeting… on military assistance to Kiev. Ukrainian militants were rebuffed," Rogov told Sputnik.
He added that aviation was involved in rebuffing the Ukrainian paratroopers.

Berlin Wants All EU Members to Join Coalition for Russian Oil Price Cap
German Finance Minister Christian Lindner told reporters that it was planned to convince all EU members of the need to join a coalition to introduce a cap on Russian oil prices — the larger the coalition, the faster the result will be achieved.

"We agreed today that we will create a coalition, we want to convince all EU members in addition to the G7 members to join it," he said following the adoption of the G7 statement.

"The larger this coalition to limit prices, the faster we will probably get good results," Lindner said.

Earlier this week, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that Russia would not supply oil to countries that would join the agreement on oil price cap.
