LIVE UPDATES: White House Confirms New Security Package for Ukraine Will Be Announced in Coming Days

The special military operation in Ukraine was launched by Russia in February, after the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics asked for assistance against Kiev's attacks. President Vladimir Putin noted that the op aimed to stop the eight-year-long conflict in Donbass, as well as to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense - over the past weeks, Kiev's troops have been shelling the biggest nuclear power plant in Europe - Zaporozhye NPP. The attacks - which did not stop even during an inspection by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi - forced the local authorities to shut down the last operating power unit of the facility to prevent any possible disasters.

Biden Says 'Hard to Tell' if Ukraine Reached Turning Point - White House Press Pool
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US President Joe Biden told reporters that it is hard to determine whether Ukraine has reached a turning point with its counteroffensive amid Russia's special military operation, according to a White House press pool report.
“The question is unanswerable," Biden said on Tuesday when asked whether Ukraine reached a turning point. "It’s hard to tell. It’s clear the Ukrainians have made significant progress, but it’s going to be a long haul.”
On Monday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States assesses that Russia maintains significant armed forces in Ukraine despite the counteroffensive and that it is too early to predict the outcome of Ukraine's counteroffensive.
Over the weekend, Ukrainian forces carried out a counteroffensive against Russian-held positions in the Kherson and Kharkiv regions, which was launched with the assistance of the US and UK intelligence services, according to US Senator Mark Warner.

IMF to Meet With Ukrainian Economic Team Next Week to Discuss New Financing - Georgieva
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - An International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission will meet with Ukraine's economic team next week to discuss new financing for the country, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Tuesday.

"We discussed a longer term engagement with Ukraine and how we can build towards a program that can more comprehensively benefit Ukraine... We agreed that a fund mission will engage with the economic team of Ukraine within the next week," Georgieva said about her telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier in the day.

The IMF chief said she and Zelensky discussed what would be the potential timeline and the amount of the new financing for Ukraine that could possibly be similar to the $1.4 billion in emergency financing that the organization provided Kiev in March.
The IMF may work toward developing a full-fledged program to help Ukraine, Georgieva added.
Georgieva described her phone call with Zelensky as very good and very substantive, adding that it focused on how the IMF can immediately be of help to Ukraine.

Ukraine to Ask UN General Assembly to Let Zelensky Address Gathering by Video - Source
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) - Ukraine will ask the UN General Assembly to let Volodymyr Zelensky address it by video during the high-level week, even though only in-person participation is allowed this year, a UN source told Sputnik on Tuesday.
The high-level week will take place on September 20-26.
"That is Ukraine Initiative [resolution] that would be tabled today/tomorrow for action on Friday," the source said.
Ukraine will ask the General Assembly to stream Zelensky's pre-recorded address, according to the source.
The office of the President of the General Assembly said that if such a request is received, it will require a simple majority to be granted.
The Russian mission to the UN previously objected to pre-recorded video participation in UN General Assembly events, even during COVID-19 restrictions. Russian delegates believe that it is a bad precedent and lowers the importance of the United Nations.

White House Confirms New Security Package for Ukraine Will Be Announced in Coming Days
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - The United States will soon announce another military aid package to Ukraine, previously reported by media outlets at $600 million, and will include similar equipment and munitions committed last week, White House Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said on Tuesday.
"I won’t get ahead of future security assistance packages [for Ukraine]. I do think you'll see another one here in the coming days. We're in lockstep with the Ukrainians, talking to them every day," Kirby said during a press briefing.
Earlier in the day, Politico, citing a congressional aide familiar with the issue, reported that the United States may announce another military aid package for Ukraine worth $600 million as part of a Western campaign to provide Kiev with lethal weapons supplies to confront Russia.
The new package may contain munitions, equipment, and vehicles similar to those provided for in the previous $675 million aid package, according to the official.
Last Thursday, the United States unveiled a new $675 million package of defense assistance for Ukraine that will include, among other things, HIMARS ammunition, four 105mm Howitzers, and high-speed anti-radiation missiles.

Rising Inflation May Push Germany Into Recession in 2023 - Economy Minister
MOSCOW (Sputnik) - If price growth in Germany remains unimpeded, there is a risk of recession in 2023, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday.
"If price growth and inflation remain unhindered, as we have seen, there is a risk of recession next year," Habeck said as aired by the Welt broadcaster.
Habeck also said that such a scenario could be prevented with a set of measures, including lowering energy prices.

"We can prevent it. It will be difficult and challenging, but a recession is not a law of nature. We have to develop a set of measures, we have to lower energy prices, we have to strengthen demand," Habeck added.

On August 30, German Federal Statistical Office said that the annual inflation in Germany accelerated from 7.5% in July to 7.9% in August.
The energy crisis coupled with rampant inflation in Germany, as well as the government's response to it have been driving forces for protests across Germany, including the ones earlier this week in Leipzig. The German Left Party said on Monday that there would be more demonstrations unless the government takes effective measures to tackle economic problems.

EU Interferes in Russian Affairs by Separating Citizens Into Visa Categories - Moscow
The decision of the European Union to categorize Russian citizens as "useful" and "useless," and label some as "unsafe" while issuing visas is an overt interference in Russia's foreign affairs, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday.

"This step is a blatant interference in the internal affairs of our country. There is a return to the Western countries' policy of the times of bloc confrontation, which was aimed at creating conditions for a brain drain, behind it," Zakharova said in a statement published by the Russian foreign ministry.

According to the spokeswoman, dividing Russians into "useful" and "useless," labeling some of them as "unsafe" and talking about any "privileges" are "blatant manifestations of xenophobia and hatred" towards the country. Moreover, such actions are aimed at forcing Russian citizens to give up their support for the country's leadership and its independent foreign policy, Zakharova added.

Zelensky Publishes Draft on Ukraine's Security Guarantees, Offers EU, US, UK, Australia, and Turkey as Guarantors
The Ukrainian presidential office published a major draft with multiple security guarantees for Kiev. It proposes that vast investments should be made into the Ukrainian economy, and that guarantor states should provide arms and share their intel with Kiev.
It also suggests that the guarantees do not rule out Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO.
Russia has repeatedly stated that any possible settlement of the crisis should see demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine, as well as guarantees that it won't join any military blocs. Moscow also stressed that Ukraine should stop the war in Donbass and recognize the DPR and LPR, as well as Crimea's reunification with Russia.
The Kremlin also warned that arms deliveries to Ukraine only contribute to the crisis, adding that western weapons are used by Kiev to target civilian infrastructure in Donbass.

The casualties of Ukrainian forces and foreign mercenaries have exceeded 800 people over the past 24 hours as a result of Russia's high-precision airborne strikes, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"As a result of the strikes, the daily losses of Ukrainian servicemen and foreign fighters exceeded 800 people killed and injured," the ministry said.

The ministry added that high-precision airborne strikes had hit the points of temporary deployment of Ukraine's air assault brigade near the cities of Slavyansk and Konstyantinovka and mechanized brigades near the settlement of Kurdyumovka, as well as other cities.
