The number of children working in Afghanistan has been on the rise since the economic situation in the country deteriorated following the Taliban* takeover more than a year ago, aid agencies say.
After the US-backed government in Afghanistan was ousted by the Taliban in August 2021, US and allied forces carried out a hasty withdrawal from the country following almost two decades of military presence.
Soon after the Taliban takeover, the US froze nearly $10 billion of Afghanistan’s assets, which led to the country's economic collapse, further aggravated by severe drought and a deadly earthquake in the eastern province of Paktika in June 2022.
