The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Saturday morning that two ballistic missiles had been launched by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), headed toward the Sea of Japan.The Japanese Defense Ministry has since reported that Pyongyang had tested two short-range ballistic missiles that flew between 217 and 248 miles, and had reached a maximum altitude of 31 miles.Japanese Coast Guard officials said they believed the missile had fallen outside of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and not caused any damage to any vessels.Citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Yonhap earlier reported that the pair of launches were detected in Pyongyang's Sunan area between 6:45 a.m. and 7:03 a.m. local time on Saturday.Other nations have long objected to Pyongyang's ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs, but the socialist state says it needs those weapons in order to guarantee its safety in lieu of a permanent peace treaty and the withdrawal of 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea.Negotiations to denuclearize the Korean peninsula took place between the US and DPRK in 2018 and 2019, but fell apart after the US refused to reciprocate North Korean moves by lowering some of its economic sanctions.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said on Saturday morning that two ballistic missiles had been launched by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), headed toward the Sea of Japan.

The launches come in the wake of
US-South Korean military drills that involves submarines, aircraft carriers, and other equipment, and the visit of US Vice President
Kamala Harris to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) separating the two Koreas. The DPRK is still technically at war with the South and the United States, since the Korean War only ended in a ceasefire in 1953 and not a permanent peace treaty, which is why the DMZ was created.
