Russia started its special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, after the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics appealed for help in defending themselves against Ukrainian provocations.
Last month saw fierce battles in Donetsk with Russian forces successfully liberating strategic town of Soledar. The capture of the strategic settlement will make it possible to cut off supply routes used by Ukrainian forces in nearby Artemovsk (Bakhmut).
The United States and western countries ramped up their military support for Ukraine after Russia launched a special military operation. Recently, the US and several Western countries announced new military supplies to Kiev, including battle tanks, armored infantry vehicles and artillery systems.

Slovakia's PM Pledges to Work on Delivery of MiG-29 Fighters to Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Eduard Heger said on Thursday that he would work on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's request for the delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets and other weapons to Ukraine.

"He asked for our help. Asked for MiG-29 aircraft. I told him that we would be discussing this at home and the public would be informed of the results of these negotiations," Heger said, as quoted by local media.

The prime minister said negotiations on further military aid to Ukraine would continue, adding that this includes negotiations at the European level as well due to the fact that MiG-29 aircraft would have been supplied by Slovakia as part of the EU mechanism that provides for the payment of military equipment for Ukraine.

Heger said that forthcoming negotiations would reveal when fighter jets could be delivered to Ukraine, adding that he has already informed Slovak Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad about Zelensky's request.

Moscow has no faith in the statements of the Ukrainian authorities about the "guarantees" not to use Western military equipment to strike deep into the Russian territory, Aleksey Polishchuk, the head of the Russian foreign ministry's second department for the Commonwealth of Independent States, told Sputnik.

"Recently, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Kiev was ready to provide Western countries with guarantees that their weapons would not be used to strike deep into the territory of Russia. Such statements cannot be trusted since the Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly demonstrated their deceit and lack of agreement," Polishchuk said.

Finland's Prime Minister Not Ruling Out Delivery of Military Aircraft to Ukraine
Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said on Thursday that she would not rule out the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine.

"I don’t want to rule out anything in this stage. I think it’s very important that we will send a clear message and signal to Ukraine," Marin told the media after the European Council summit.

On Thursday, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola urged EU countries to consider providing Kiev with long-range missile systems and military aircraft.

Macron Reportedly Says Fighter Jets Cannot Be Delivered to Kiev in Coming Weeks
French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday did not rule out the delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine but said that Kiev has other priorities now.

As Macron said, fighter jets that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requests from Europe "at the moment do not meet the needs" of the Ukrainian military, as quoted by a French broadcaster.

The president said he was "absolutely not ruling anything out," but fighter jets can under no circumstances be delivered to Ukraine in the coming weeks. Macron added he prefers to help Ukraine with other "priorities," such as the delivery of Caesar howitzers.

US Lawmakers Introduce Resolution Urging Peace Deal, End to Ukraine Aid
US House lawmakers introduced a resolution calling for the United States to end its assistance to Ukraine and urging a peaceful settlement of the conflict, according to a copy of the bill obtained by Fox News.
Congressman Matt Gaetz and ten co-sponsors are introducing the bill, known as the Ukraine Fatigue Resolution, following the provision of more than $100 billion of taxpayer money to Ukrainian initiatives.
The resolution expresses the sense of the House that the United States "must end its military and financial aid to Ukraine," the bill text said.
In addition, the resolution "urges all combatants" to reach a peace agreement.
The United States is inadvertently contributing to civilian casualties by providing assistance, the resolution also said.

European Council President Says Coming Weeks May Define Course of Ukrainian Conflict
President of the European Council Charles Michel said Thursday that the coming weeks and months may be "decisive" for Ukraine, calling on EU countries to provide Kiev with maximum support, including military aid.
EU leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have gathered for the Special European Council in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.
"We realize that the coming weeks and months will probably be decisive. We must remain open-eyed, lucid and we must continue to provide maximum level of support," Michel said at a joint press conference with European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen and Zelensky following the summit.

US President Joe Biden said Thursday there is a possibility he may visit Poland, when asked about reports of him preparing to travel to Poland and Ukraine on the anniversary of Russia's special military operation.
"I haven't made a decision when I'm going to Poland or even if for certain I am going to Poland," Biden told journalists.
When asked if there is any possibility that he might go to Ukraine, he stressed: "There’s a possibility I may go to Poland, but that’s all."

Belgium Lacks Extra Fighter Jets to Supply to Ukraine - Prime Minister
Belgium cannot send fighter jets to Ukraine as its own air force needs them, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Thursday.
"We need our fighters. They are in active use, for instance, in the Baltic States to protect the aerospace of NATO members and our aerospace. We cannot afford to abandon our fighters," he told reporters before a top-level EU summit in Brussels where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was also present.
De Croo added that Belgium had agreed a massive military assistance package for Ukraine, which "should not be underestimated."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday called on the European Union to impose sanctions against Russian manufacturers of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as IT-companies cooperating with them.
"It is in the interests of all of us, both Ukrainians and Europeans, that Russia cannot make new missiles... Borrell Expects EU Summit in Brussels to Agree More Military Support for Ukraine
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Thursday he was certain that the two-day Special European Council would result in a consensus to provide Ukraine with more military and financial assistance.

Ukrainian President Addresses European Parliament, Thanks EU for Support During Conflict
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday addressed a special plenary session of the European Parliament and thanked the bloc for its support for Kiev.
Zelensky is paying a visit to Brussels where he is also participating in the EU summit from February 9-10.
"Europe is lucky that in the biggest parliament in Europe, a principled and energized approach enjoys an absolute majority. Our Europe gives the world a European way of life, style of life, rules of life. It is when each and everyone is valuable and when states strive to be social and society strives to be open. When borders are not violated and people believe in future," Zelensky said.
In his speech, Zelensky thanked the EU for its efforts to help Ukraine and joint struggle for a "free and independent Europe."
The Ukrainian president also stated that his country was coming closer to the accession to the EU and expressed confidence that Kiev would be a EU member in future.
Zelensky signed an application for Ukraine's accession to the EU on February 28, 2022, four days after Russia launched its special military operation. On June 23, EU heads of state approved candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova. To start accession talks, the countries need to fulfill a number of conditions, including wide-ranging reforms.

IAEA Head Makes New Proposals for Maintaining ZNPP Safety Zone
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi has put forward new proposals concerning safety zone around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (ZNPP) which Moscow is currently evaluating to determine if they are viable and beneficial, Russian Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov said on Thursday.

EU's Metsola Calls on EU States to Send Long-Range Missile Systems, Fighters to Kiev
Head of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola called on the EU's member states to provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems and fighters at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.
Zelensky arrived in Brussels earlier in the day to partake in the EU summit that will discuss the increase in military, political and financial support for Kiev.
"Now, [EU] states must consider quickly as a next step providing long-range systems and the [fighter] jets that you need to protect the liberty," Metsola said.

"Currently, we are implementing a plan for the restoration and maintenance of Leopard 2 tanks. In accordance with the implementation of this plan, we will be able to ship three of them in the coming March," a local newspaper quoted Prime Minister António Costa as saying at a parliamentary hearing.
