A special military operation which Russia has been carrying out in Ukraine came in response to the request of the people's republics of Donetsk and Lugansk to protect their citizens amidst increased attacks from the Kiev regime.
After Russia's operation "to demilitarize and de-Nazify Ukraine" began, the United States and its allies ramped up their military support for Kiev. Recently, the US and several Western countries announced new military supplies to Ukraine, including battle tanks, armored infantry vehicles and artillery systems.
In April 2022, Moscow sent a note to NATO member states condemning their military assistance to Kiev, noting that pumping Ukraine with weapons was not conducive to peace talks and would have a detrimental effect on the conflict.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that any arms shipments on Ukrainian territory would be "legitimate targets" for Russian forces.

Germany, France, UK Offer Defense Pact to Zelensky Amid Push for Peace Talks - Reports
Germany, France and the United Kingdom have dangled a defense pact in front of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to get him to the negotiating table with Russia, American business newspaper reported on Friday, citing officials from the three governments.
The officials told the newspaper that Berlin, Paris and London were becoming increasingly worried that a drawn-out conflict and a looming stalemate would stretch their capacity to sustain the war effort to the limit.
"We keep repeating that Russia mustn't win, but what does that mean? If the war goes on for long enough with this intensity, Ukraine's losses will become unbearable," a senior French official said, adding that no one believed Ukraine would be able to capture Crimea from Russia.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reportedly wants to table his blueprint of a pact with Ukraine at the next NATO summit in July, while French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Zelensky at a meeting in Paris in early February that he should start preparing for peace talks with Russia, the daily newspaper cited people familiar with the conversation as saying.
The pact being floated will not put NATO boots on the ground but will apply the Article 5 collective defense clause to Ukraine in the event of an attack on it and will potentially give the eastern European nation access to a broader array of NATO standard weapons.
The report said that German and US officials had declined to comment on the proposed security pact, while spokespeople from the UK and French governments did not immediately respond to its requests for comment.

EU Criticizes China's Peace Settlement Plan for Ukraine as 'Selective'
EU Commission Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Nabila Massrali criticized on Friday China's initiative on the peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict as "selective" and said that it was "blurring the roles of the aggressor and the aggressed."
"We have taken careful note of China's twelve-point position. It is a political initiative. It emphasizes certain principles of the UN Charter, but is selective and insufficient ... The position paper does not take into account who is the aggressor and who is the victim of an illegal, unjustified war," Massrali told a press briefing.
The European Union believes that it is wrong to take into account Russia's security interests that cannot serve as a "justification" for Moscow's actions in Ukraine, the spokeswoman added.
