Entente or Triple Entente is an alliance of states that fought Germany in First World War. The Russian Empire was initially part of Entente, however after the October Revolution, the former allies turned their back on Russia and were happy to backstab it through an invasion.
The intervention had two major goals – to eliminate the mere idea of an anti-capitalist state and establish a rubber-stamp regime in Russia controlled by western governments. However, they made a mistake by underestimating Russian people and the Bolsheviks.
The US government was reluctant to intervene since they wanted to watch and side with the winners. At that time, American strategists were already mulling the foundations of their foreign policy aimed at world hegemony. They planned to exploit the weaknesses of Soviet Russia and its opponents.
Still, there was no unity between Entente and satellite states. Despite the fact, that 14 nations intervened in Soviet Russia, they pursued different and sometimes contradicting agendas.
For instance, the US wanted to stay aside from the Civil War in Russia and watch. But US an elite was afraid that Japan, France and UK would strengthen their geopolitical positions, so in the end the US decided to intervene in order to counter-balance other nations.
Foreign troops were not ready to fight and die on Russian soil. The majority of them were sympathetic to the Soviet government that wanted to build an equal and just society.
Bolsheviks were shrewd politicians who managed to completely demoralize foreign troops, who never wanted to fight Russia or Russians in the first place. They explained that capitalist states do not care how many soldiers die unless they are able to seize Russian resources and territories.
Vladimir Lenin and his associates were quiet adept at understanding people needs and wants. They appealed to the national pride of Russians and their innate desire for social justice reinforced by Marxist ideology.
The majority of British and French troops were evacuated in summer 1919. Foreign governments were mocked by their own people, who saw Soviet Russia as a progressive state which managed to defeat 14 nations at once.
Russia gradually became the undisputable leader of the international Left movement.
The withdrawal of foreign troops sealed the outcome of the civil war.
