WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan wrote in a magazine editorial just days before the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel that the Biden administration had established peace in the Middle East, but later modified his essay to reflect the attack, the US media reported.
"The region is quieter than it has been for decades," Sullivan said in the original essay as quoted by media on Wednesday.
"The progress is fragile, to be sure. But it is also not an accident... [Biden's] approach returns discipline to US policy. It emphasizes deterring aggression, de-escalating conflicts, and integrating the region."
According to the report, Sullivan also claimed that although the Palestine-Israel conflict remains tense, the Biden administration de-escalated the crisis in the Gaza Strip and restored diplomatic ties between the two parties.
Sullivan also said US troops were no longer regularly attacked in Iraq and Syria, adding that the peace in the Middle East was a result of military action combined with diplomacy to deter Iran's influence in the region.

The US Central Command earlier admitted that over 20 American service members had sustained injuries during attacks on US military bases in Iraq and Syria since the start of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

CENTCOM specifically noted that attacks were undertaken against US forces in Bashur, Iraq; Baghdad Diplomatic Support Center, Iraq; Mission Support Site Euphrates, Syria; and Mission Support Site Green Village, Syria.

Israel and US Fear New Humiliation in Ground Invasion of Gaza
Sullivan had already been publicly scrutinized for claiming the Middle East had become more stabilized days before Hamas carried out attacks against Israel on October 7, which led to Israel declaring war on the Palestinian movement. Some 1,200 Israeli soldiers and civilians have died and some 6,000 Palestinians with multiple thousands of wounded since October 7.
