Russian President Putin will hold talks with Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is visiting Russia on a working trip.
The agenda includes strengthening Russian-Syrian ties across political, economic, and humanitarian fields, as well as reviewing the latest developments in the Middle East.

Transitional President of Syria Ahmad Sharaa

Ahmad Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani, has served as interim president of Syria since January 2025, following the departure of former President Bashar al-Assad’s government at the end of 2024.
Sharaa was born in 1982 in Riyadh to a Syrian family from the Golan Heights. His father, Hussein Sharaa, was an Arab nationalist and educator working in Saudi Arabia.
Raised in a nationalist environment, Sharaa became interested in jihadist ideology early on and joined Al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2003 to fight US forces. From 2006 to 2011, he was imprisoned at the Bucca detention camp. In 2016, Sharaa broke with Al-Qaeda and founded Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), later establishing the Salvation Government in Idlib, based on Shura principles and Islamic justice.
In December 2024, he led a rapid offensive by Syrian opposition groups that resulted in control over Damascus.
On January 29, 2025, Ahmad Sharaa was appointed interim president of Syria at an extended assembly of armed opposition factions. On the same day, the Ba’ath Party, which had ruled for over 60 years, the People’s Council (parliament), the army, and all security structures were dissolved.
On March 13, 2025, Sharaa signed a constitutional declaration establishing a five-year transitional period for Syria. Sharaa began performing his duties as head of state, holding bilateral meetings in Damascus and visiting regional countries including Turkey and Saudi Arabia. He later went to New York, becoming the first Syrian president to address the UN since 1967. In 2025, Time magazine included Ahmad Sharaa in its list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
His visit to Moscow on October 15, 2025, will be historic, with planned discussions with President Vladimir Putin on bilateral relations and strengthening economic and defense cooperation.
Earlier, on September 12, Sharaa emphasized that:
"Syria and Russia share strong historical ties that must be preserved. Russia is an important world power and a UN Security Council member. We have inherited close relations between Syria and Russia, and we must maintain them."
