Russia will factor the possibility of nuclear weapons being deployed in Sweden and its participation in France's nuclear weapons doctrine into its military and political planning, Russian Ambassador to Stockholm Sergey Belyaev told Sputnik.
"Naturally, Russia will be forced to take these circumstances into account in its military and political planning," the head of the diplomatic mission said, commenting on the possibility of nuclear weapons deployment in Sweden and the kingdom's participation in France's nuclear weapons doctrine.
The ambassador recalled that the topic of nuclear weapons had recently been actively discussed in Swedish society.

Sweden Not Ruling Out Deployment of Nuclear Weapons in Wartime

According to Belyaev, at the core of this discussion is the question of whether European states could continue to trust the United States as a leading NATO ally or whether Europe should strengthen its own nuclear potential.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country was entering a period of "advanced nuclear deterrence." As part of this new approach, Paris will increase the number of nuclear warheads, and European countries will be able to participate in joint deterrence exercises. According to Macron, eight European countries, including Sweden, will join France's "doctrine."
