"The president's view is that it was necessary, appropriate, and deliberate action", Psaki told reporters. "These strikes [were] designed to limit the risk of escalation".

The Biden administration is briefing members of Congress and sent some notifications to other staff members prior to the attack, Psaki said. She added that the United States is in close touch with its partners in the region about the situation.

Late Sunday, the Pentagon said that US military aircraft had struck facilities of KH and KSS in the Syrian-Iraqi border region in response to attacks against American interests in Iraq. According to Syrian state television, the airstrikes likely left a child killed and three people injured.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this day that the latest US airstrikes on the border between Iraq and Syria send a strong message to Iranian-backed militias that will hopefully be received.
