Beijing Says No Compromise on Taiwan, US Must Stick to One-China Principle

BEIJING (Sputnik) - Chinese Central Foreign Affairs Office Director Wang Yi said at a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Beijing will not compromise on the issue of Taiwan, and Washington must respect China's sovereignty, a Chinese broadcaster reported on Monday.

During the meeting, Yi focused on analyzing the essence of the Taiwan issue, emphasizing that there is no room for any compromise for China on this matter, the broadcaster said.
The US must genuinely adhere to the one-China principle established in the three joint US-China communiques, respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and clearly oppose Taiwan independence, the top official added.
Seven members of the US House of Representatives have addressed Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging him to include a stopover in Taiwan on his visit to China this week, calling the breakaway island “friends and allies.”
Despite the rhetoric, the US does not officially recognize Taiwan in order to keep economic and diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.

During a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Wang Yi said that the United States should make a choice between dialogue and confrontation, cooperation and conflict.
"The secretary of state's trip to Beijing comes at a critical time in Sino-US relations, a choice must be made between dialogue and confrontation, cooperation and conflict," Wang was quoted as saying by the China Central Television broadcaster (CCTV) on Monday.
He also said that as history moves forward, Sino-US relations should move forward as well.
"We must show responsibility to the people, history, the world, reverse the downward trend in China-US relations, and work together to find ways for the US and China to get along in a new era," Wang said.
Earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed the hope at a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that the latter's visit will contribute to the stabilization of the relations between the countries, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Monday.

"President Xi said state-to-state interactions should always be based on mutual respect and sincerity. Hope this visit by Secretary Blinken could make positive contributions to stabilizing relations," Hua tweeted.

Later in the day, Xi Jinping stated that China and the United States have reached progress and agreements on a number of issues during the visit of the US Secretary of State.
"The Chinese side stated its position, and both sides agreed to jointly implement the consensus reached by me and US President Joe Biden in Bali [on the sidelines of the G20 summit in 2022]. The parties have also made progress and reached agreements on some specific issues, which is very good," Xi said at a meeting with Blinken.
Blinken is paying a visit to China from June 18-19. On Sunday, he met with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang. It is Blinken’s first visit to China in his current role and the first US Secretary of State visit to Beijing since 2018. It took the US administration almost six months to put this visit back on the schedule after the initial visit was postponed over the balloon accident in February.
