One Civilian Killed and Seven Injured by Pakistani Firing Along Line of Control - India
05:43 GMT 30.10.2019 (Updated: 06:17 GMT 30.10.2019) According to the Indian Army, Pakistan violated a ceasefire between the two countries, firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir on Tuesday night.
New Delhi on Wednesday announced that one civilian was killed and seven other people (including two soldiers) were wounded after Islamabad started firing along the LoC in the Machil sector of Kupwara, adding that the injured had been sent to a hospital.
According to the military, heavy firing and shelling are also underway in Sharda and Changan in the Neelum Valley.
The two sides have repeatedly blamed each other for causing multiple casualties and heavy damage in the civilian areas of the disputed region.
Tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad resumed this February after a deadly attack on Indian troops, which the country blamed on militants from the Jaish-e-Mohammed organisation. After boosting security in Kashmir, the Indian government revoked its special status, causing unrest in the area and a new downward spiral in ties with Pakistan.
Since gaining independence in 1947, both Islamabad and New Delhi have staked a claim to Kashmir. This has led to full-scale armed clashes between the countries as well as the recent stalemate.
