NEW DELHI, JANUARY 7. /RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT VALERI SEVRYUKOV/ -- India has assembled its first T-90S tank of parts and units coming from Russia. The official ceremony of the tank's rolling off the conveyer line and being passed to the Indian army was held on Wednesday at the Awadi heavy engineering works in Tamil Nadu.

The ceremony was attended by defence products minister Rajagopal, top officers from the land forces' headquarters, representatives of the Russian State Foreign-Trade Company Rosoboronexport and 20 Russian specialists giving screw-driving assistance to their Indian colleagues.

In its time, the same works assembled the T-72 tanks with help from Soviet specialists. The first issue of the T-90S reflects the on-ward development of Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation, Russia's Consul-General in the south district of India Mikhail Mgeladze said to RIA Novosti.

To him, 186 T-90S tanks will be assembled in India. In two to three years to come, Indian factories will begin independent manufacture of these tanks under Russian license, as provided for in the agreement signed three years ago. Under the same agreement, 124 assembled tanks T-90S have already been shipped to India, where they have been put on the army inventories.
