MOSCOW, August 4 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow hopes the situation in Mauritania following Wednesday's coup will be resolved peacefully, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Thursday. "Moscow hopes for a constitutional resolution of the situation in Mauritania... without the use of force and confirms its adherence to the steady development of relations between the two countries," the statement said.
The statement also said the Foreign Ministry was maintaining steady contacts with the Russian Embassy in Nouakchott and was closely monitoring the development of the situation.
"Adequate measures have been taken to ensure the security of Russian citizens in Mauritania," the statement said.
A military junta overthrew the government of President Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya, who was out of the country at the time.
They junta calls itself the Military Council for Justice and Democracy.
According to the media, the military took control of government offices, the capital's airport, national television and radio stations.
