Costumes for young women in Olympic medal ceremonies

The only difference from this photo and a real medal ceremony is that the girls will identical suits.

The costumes for the medal ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Games were designed by Vancouver fashion designer Yumi Eto, left.

In conceiving costumes that would be seen worldwide, Canadian fashion designers discarded more garish colors preferring a dark-blue motif typical of British Columbia’s skies at dusk. They also used the motifs typical of Canadian author and artist Emily Carr, who was heavily inspired by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. Her name is immortalized at the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Each of these suits will be worn over vintage ski suits and boots.

This parka is designed for an open-air medal ceremony. Canadian fashion designers opted for a cocoon shape, hence the name: Cocoon Parka.

This costume is designed to escort medalists to the ceremonial podium. Its stylish drawings and Olympic-medal etchings will differ. Costumes with stylish killer whale images will be used during the Winter Olympics, while those for the Paralympics will feature raven images, utilizing the artistic tradition of Canada’s First Nations, a term of ethnicity referring to the natives who are neither Inuit, nor Metis.

These large knit vintage sweaters with broad leather belts will be worn by young ladies during the indoor medals ceremonies, for instance for the hockey and figure skating champions. The sweaters’ color patterns symbolize the national colors of all countries taking part in the Vancouver Olympic Games. A small number of these sweaters will be sold during the Olympics.

As Canada is not the warmest country in the world, local artisans devised their own hand-knitting methods long ago. This process is passed from generation to generation. This Heritage Sweater, made using the traditional process, comes together with a stylish silk scarf.

While designing caps and scarves for the young women escorting Olympic medalists, the fashion designers tried to create an artistic similarity to intricate cracks in ice flows and frost patterns on windows.

Canadian designers saw to it that even the most unimportant parts of the medals ceremony have similar details and fit into the overall picture. Consequently, the female costume designs match the design of the medal etchings, while the relief-shaped trays blend perfectly with the unique concave-convex Olympic medals, due to be awarded in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Olympics organizers have proclaimed the games to be the most environmentally-friendly games in history. Consequently, the pedestals and medal trays are made of timber produced from the forests of British Columbia.

The podium for future Olympic champions is also made of wood. Actually, there is not one but 23 unique podiums for 11 different stadiums. All of them are made from different species of trees native to British Columbia. Only one tree species is used to make each podium.

When viewed from above, the podium resembles Vancouver Island.
