The St. Andronik Monastery, a former monastery on the left bank of the Yauza River near one of the Poklonnaya Hills. It was founded in 1357 by Metropolitan Alexy as the metropolitan’s monastery, and named after its first abbot, Andronik, one of the disciples of Sergius of Radonezh.
The Catholic Church of Immaculate Conception on Malaya Gruzinskaya Street was built between 1901 and 1911. After it was closed in 1937, the church was looted and its organ was destroyed. In December 1999, the restored church was consecrated and designated as a cathedral. In 2002, it received a new organ from the Cathedral of Basel (Basel Münster).
The Martha and Mary Convent of Mercy on Bolshaya Ordynka Street was founded by Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia in 1909. The convent’s Cathedral of the Protection of the Mother of God was designed by the architect Alexei Shchusev. The convent is currently home to an orphanage for girls, a soup kitchen and a social services office.
The construction of the Lutheran church in Starosadsky Lane was financed by King Frederick William IV of Prussia, who was related to the Romanov royal dynasty. Its grounds are currently owned by the Evangelical and Lutheran Community of St. Peter and Paul, with services conducted in Russian, German and French. The church often hosts organ and instrumental concerts.
