Leader of the Polish People's Party Waldemar Pawlak handed in to the Central Election Commission on Saturday 191,730 signatures backing his official registration as a candidate for the Polish presidential elections.
"The signatures will be verified on the first working day of next week, May 4," a spokesman from the commission said.
Former Polish President Lech Kaczynski died in a presidential plane crash on April 10 near the Russian town of Smolensk. Parliamentary powers were automatically transferred to Speaker Bronislaw Komorowski who set the date for early presidential elections for June 20.
Potential presidential candidates must amass 100,000 signatures from supporters to register for the elections.
The Electoral Commission said Bronislaw Komorowski, The late president's brother and former leader of the Law and Justice Party Yaroslav Kaczynski, and leader of the Democratic Left Alliance Grzegorz Napieralski are also almost ready to hand in their 100,000 signatures of support.
