The Russian government has decided to set aside 300 million rubles ($10 billion) to irrigate peat bogs and reduce the fire risk in the most dangerous areas of the Moscow Region.

Peat bog irrigation in the Moscow Region will begin on Thursday, August 12, proceeding from the east of the region, a spokesperson for the region’s governor told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.

At present residents of the village of Demidovo still have to fight fires with whatever they have at hand.

As of August 11, 40 wildfires were raging in the Moscow Region covering a total area of 218.3 hectares, including 17 peat bog fires over an area of 43.4 hectares and 23 forest fires over an area of 174.9 hectares. The day before there were 37 wildfires covering an area of 188.2 hectares.
