Russian observers will make an unbiased assessment of the December 19 presidential elections in Belarus, a Kremlin source said on Monday.

Russian observers will make an unbiased assessment of the December 19 presidential elections in Belarus, a Kremlin source said on Monday.

"Russian observers will assess the elections adequately," the source said.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday accused Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of trying to pass Russia off as the country's main enemy in a bid to secure votes ahead of the elections.

He also said that Minsk's refusal to recognize the former Georgian republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia was dishonest and could affect future Russian-Belarusian relations.

Lukashenko promised to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in early August but has yet to act on his word. The republics were recognized by Russia two weeks after a five-day war with Georgia in 2008.

Lukashenko won landslide victories in the 1994, 2001 and 2006 elections and is a front-runner of this year's elections, although some analysts say Russia, which has traditionally supported Lukashenko, may support an opposition candidate at the polls.
