The State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana” was established 90 years ago, on June 10, 1921. The Tolstoy family believed that the estate was named Yasnaya Polyana (Sunny Meadow) after a spacious sunny valley located nearby. It is also possible that it was named after the Yasenka river.

Leo Tolstoy inherited the estate in 1847. He spent most his life there. Photo: Leo Tolstoy with his family and friends in the Yasnaya Polyana garden, 1888.
The history of the estate goes back several hundred years. Prince Nickolay Volkonsky passed it down to his only daughter, Maria, Leo Tolstoy’s mover, at the end of 18th century.
Tolstoy finally settled down at Yasnaya Polyana in 1856, living at first only in the house’s former annex. Nowadays the annex serves as a Tolstoy museum.
During their 45-day occupation, German invaders managed to almost completely destroy Yasnaya Polyana. Photo: Dining-room at Yasnaya Polyana, destroyed by German soldiers in 1941.
Museum-estate Yasnaya Polyana is nowadays a unique historical monument. The old buildings, picturesque parks, gardens and forests on its territory are being preserved.
Volkonsky house is the oldest building on the whole estate. Tolstoy’s grandfather is believed to have lived there for a while. In Leo Tolstoy’s time, the house was used as servants quarters, cooking and laundry.
The Kuzminsky’s wing was named after Tatiana Kuzminskaya, Tolstoy’s sister-in-law, who regularly stayed there with her family. In 1859 Leo Tolstoy opened a school for local village children there. The school existed till 1862. In the 1950s, a Literature museum was opened in the wing.
Kozlova Zaseka – the closest railway station – was opened in 1868.
