The State Memorial and Natural Preserve Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy “Yasnaya Polyana” was established 90 years ago, on June 10, 1921. The Tolstoy family believed that the estate was named Yasnaya Polyana (Sunny Meadow) after a spacious sunny valley located nearby. It is also possible that it was named after the Yasenka river.

© RIA NovostiThe Kuzminsky’s wing was named after Tatiana Kuzminskaya, Tolstoy’s sister-in-law, who regularly stayed there with her family. In 1859 Leo Tolstoy opened a school for local village children there. The school existed till 1862. In the 1950s, a Literature museum was opened in the wing.

The Kuzminsky’s wing was named after Tatiana Kuzminskaya, Tolstoy’s sister-in-law, who regularly stayed there with her family. In 1859 Leo Tolstoy opened a school for local village children there. The school existed till 1862. In the 1950s, a Literature museum was opened in the wing.
