A walk in central Moscow can be a real challenge for women in high heels this summer.

The asphalt walkways in the city center are being resurfaced with bricks.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin allocated the funds to spruce up Moscow’s sidewalks. He pointed out that 90% of the walkways are asphalt and that in the summer they can melt, and then in the fall they look pretty bad.

The sidewalks are being resurfaced on Gogol, Pokrovsky, Petrovsky, Rozhdestvensky and Tverskoi boulevards, on Ostozhenka and Bolshaya Nikitskaya streets, on Trubnaya and Turgenev squares and on some other streets of Moscow.

According to the Moscow Department for Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the bricks are more environmentally-friendly and cost-effective.

Puddles don’t accumulate on this kind of surface; it drains away through the small gaps between the bricks.

The department also points out that natural or artificial stones are more heat-resistant in summer, which makes them more durable than asphalt.

The resurfacing will be finished by this November.
