Sixty-five years ago, on October 1, 1946, verdicts were brought in the Nuremberg Trials against a number of Nazi war criminals. The trials of the former leadership of defeated Nazi Germany were held by the victorious Allied forces of World War II.
After the surrender of Nazi Germany, the victorious nations adopted the London Charter of the International Military Tribunal. In the photo: Hitler's Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess reading out a pledge not to imitate his loss of mind, which he did before.
Nuremberg, Bavaria, was selected as the site of the trials for specific reasons. First, the U.S. side wanted to try Goering, Hess and other Nazi criminals in their occupied zone.
Second, the Palace of Justice in Nurember was spacious and largely undamaged. A large prison was also part of the complex. In the photo: Soviet writer and journalist Ilya Erenburg in the courtroom.
A wooden passage was constructed to connect the prison with the court’s building so that the defendants could be safely taken from their cells to the courtroom. In the photo: Colonel Robert Storey, the first Executive Trial Counsel of the American Prosecution.
In 1942, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill said that the Nazi leadership should be executed without any trial and stood his ground in the future. In the photo: A shot from the documentary Judgment of the Peoples directed by Roman Karmen.
When Churchill tried to impose his opinion on Josef Stalin, Stalin said the execution should be a court ruling. In the photo: Hermann Goering during the trials.
More than 400 court hearings were held during the Nuremberg trials. Sir Geoffrey Lawrence was the President of the Judicial group. In the photo: Soviet writer and journalist Vsevolod Vishnevsky and the Kukryniksy cartoonists in the courtroom.
Death sentences by hanging were carried out October 16, 1946. Hermann Goering committed suicide with a potassium cyanide capsule the night before the execution.
