Alisa Kleybanova's first tournament after recovering from cancer was stopped at the second-round stage by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko.
Kirilenko won 7-6 (1), 6-3 on Friday to set up a third-round meeting at the Miami Masters with compatriot Ksenia Pervak, ending Kleybanova's tournament, but not her comeback.
"I can't say I'm disappointed in my play at the event," said Kleybanova, a wild card entrant who battled past Johanna Larsson in a first-round three-setter. "For me it was just great to get back on the court, and I managed to win my first match after a long break, and in the second, put up a fight against such a great athlete as Maria Kirilenko."
Kleybanova, a former world No. 20, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in July and announced on her 22nd birthday that she was quitting the sport to focus on fighting off cancer.
She received the all-clear from doctors in February and got a wild card for the Miami tournament.
Two other Russians were knocked out along with Kleybanova on Friday as Nadia Petrova lost 6-3, 6-2 to Romania's Simona Halep and wild card Garbine Muguruza Blanco of Spain shocked Vera Zvonareva 6-4, 6-3.
In men's play, American John Isner knocked out Nikolay Davydenko 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 after the Russian beat James Blake in the first round.
