Voter turnout on Russia’s first unified voting day, October 14, 2012, could reach 80% given “diligent effort,” said Vladimir Churov, the head of the Central Election Commission.
The unified voting day will see local legislatures elected in six Russian regions (Northern Ossetia, Udmurtia, Krasnodar Territory, and the Penza, Saratov and Sakhalin regions) and governors elected in five (the Ryazan, Amur, Bryansk, Novgorod and Belgorod regions), he said.
“A diligent effort could raise average voter turnout [in the voting regions] to 80%,” Churov said at the Gvardeisk youth camp in Lipetsk Region.
The average voter turnout in recent years has been about 60 percent, Churov said, adding that it was 56% before 2007.
