MOSCOW, December 2 (RIA Novosti) - The M23 rebels on Saturday left Goma, a strategic city in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 11 days after they have seized it, BBC reported.

The 23 March movement (M23) is comprised mainly of soldiers who mutinied from the DRC national army in April.

Under an agreement mediated by Uganda, the rebels are to pull out to a 20 km buffer zone around the city. As part of the deal, 270 Congolese policemen have entered the city.

The city’s airport will be guarded by joint forces of government troops, UN peacekeepers and about 100 M23 rebels.

Goma is the capital of resources-rich province of North Kivu on the border with Rwanda. Since 2004, the area was the zone of an armed conflict between the DRC authorities and anti-government armed groups, allegedly supported by neighboring Rwanda.

Rwanda strongly denied any involvement into the conflict, including support for M23.
