WASHINGTON, June 28 (RIA Novosti) - Kazakh-born boxer Gennady Golovkin is set to fight England’s Matthew Macklin at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut Saturday.
Golovkin, 31, who won the silver medal at the Athens Olympics in 2004, is the reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion. Regarded as a top talent in his weight class, the match is part of an ambitious plan to cement his reputation at the top of professional boxing.
The Connecticut bout is the third of a planned five Golovkin fights in 2013; most elite boxers only fight twice a year.
Golovkin, who is based in Stuttgart but trains in Big Bear, California, holds the highest knock-out ratio in middleweight championship history, having scored 23 knockouts in 26 wins. He is undefeated.
