Estonian criminal police have detained the head of a local anti-fascist group as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, Estonian TV channels reported Sunday.

MOSCOW, January 5 (RIA Novosti) – Estonian criminal police have detained the head of a local anti-fascist group as part of an investigation into alleged corruption, Estonian TV channels reported Sunday.

Andrei Zarenkov, who heads the activist group Estonia Without Nazism and a community center in Maardu, part of Tallinn metropolitan area, was arrested on Saturday night for allegedly receiving a bribe, local prosecutors said.

The corruption probe is linked to Zarenkov’s activity as the head of the Maardu center, prosecutors said. Police have conducted searches in his office and house.

A man who is suspected of giving the bribe has been detained.

Zarenkov is well-known in Estonia as a politician who fought for the rights of the Russian community. Many ethnic Russians have "non-citizen" status, which denies them a national passport and prevents them from voting.

In December, Zarenkov, a member of the Coordination Council of Russian Compatriots, organized an international conference on protecting the rights of the Russian community in the Baltic states.
