A number of international experts are discussing sanctions against Russia, with listeners and readers chiming in. Jon Hellevig, a Finnish political analyst and businessman, believes that the voice of the Western business community cannot be heard by the policy makers.

“We have the EU, which is totally an undemocratic institution. And they are covered by propaganda press in the West that lies to the public about everything that is going on.”

Another spokesman, Dmitry Kurochkin, Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, has another opinion: “I wouldn’t use the term ‘sanctions’ in this particular case, I would rather call it unilateral restrictive measures. And, frankly speaking, those who impose them are going beyond their national jurisdiction.”

Radio VR listener: “As an EU citizen, nobody asked me if I want to sanction Russia”

Here is what our listeners and readers feedback:

Dragomir Bogdan Alexandru believes: “Putin is too smart to be fooled by some desperate western greedy non leaders...the west wants to dictate the world and they can't control putin so they try desperatly to "punish" him...they will never succeed.”

Victor Chisango added: “Russia will never tolerate nonsense people must united and stop America for moving around the world causing havoc.”

Jon Voranart suggested: “Russia should turn East, we have the money, the product and everything to supply Russia.”

Niko Kossev wrote: “As an EU citizen, nobody asked me if I want to sanction Russia. Long live democracy. Because WE are going to stay in the cold when Russia decides to stop the gas. It happened some years ago and it wasn't funny. Not at all.  I believe that this isn't our fight, that is between Russia and Ukraine and we shouldn't get involved.”

Michael Boschat has a different opinion: “I have a feeling that Russia may not be able to hold out in the long runs as the USSR did with sanctions. China could help as there have been agreements but will USA/NATO put pressure on China to collapse it so it cannot help Russia? difficult to say but hoping [people] here in West can overcome their child like behavior towards Russia.

Isobel Jardine wrote: “German business leaders were opposed to sanctions, it is a pity that the Government there are apparently US puppets. I would have hoped they'd have more strength but really it is about the EU wanting control of Ukraine, not for the benefit of Ukrainian people but for the EU.

US and EU actions in Ukraine have been totally evil.

This i just a power struggle, the US in debt apparently to $3 trillion, an impossible figure to imagine, is desperately trying to destroy Russia financially under the pretense of righteous indignation over Ukraine.”
