VLADIVOSTOK, August 26 (RIA Novosti) – The Shonan Maru 2 Japanese whaling ship, detained on suspicion of violating Russian naval borders, left the port of Magadan, its captain fined $830, the Magadan Department of the Russian Border Guard Service said Tuesday.
“The investigation has been completed. On Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. local time the ship was allowed to leave the port and departed from Magadan. The captain was subjected to administrative penalties in the form of a 30,000-ruble [$830] fine,” the representative told RIA Novosti.
On August 15, the Shonan Maru 2 whaling ship was stopped by Russian border guards in the Sea of Okhotsk and its crew was asked to sail to the port of Magadan for further questioning. The ship, hired by a research agency, was conducting observations of the area’s whale population, but diverted from its route and entered Russian territorial waters.
