MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Doctors Without Borders has criticized Friday the attempts of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the international community to fight the Ebola outbreak.

"We have already warned against the spread of the Ebola virus in March. Not later than in June was the epidemic out of control. But even the WHO responded hesitantly," Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper quoted Tankred Stoebe, the chairman of the German branch of the international aid organization as saying.

"The global community must now act decisively and quickly. We need staff trained in tropical medicine and more beds in the three most affected countries in Western African Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea," Stoebe added.

"We need to finally invest money in the development of vaccines and drugs against Ebola," Stoebe stated pointing out that the amount of financial help provided by the international community is not sufficient.

The current Ebola epidemic, one of the current global security issues, started in southern Guinea in February and later spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, and Senegal, with several Ebola cases having been reported outside of West Africa.

According to the World Health Organization, as of October 12, 4,493 people have died from the current Ebola outbreak, with a total of 8,997 Ebola cases confirmed.
