KHABAROVSK, October 18 (RIA Novosti) - A resident of Russia's Far East town and her child were hospitalized with symptoms of acute respiratory viral infection after returning from Nigeria, where Ebola cases have been reported, Minister of Health of the Khabarovsk Territory said Saturday.
"A mother and a child at the age of one year and nine months came [to Komsomolsk-on-Amur in Russia’s far eastern Khabarovsk Territory] from Nigeria. The child had a fever. They were offered hospitalization, they took tests, including the Ebola virus test. The test results will be ready on Tuesday... doctors do not see the symptoms of the dangerous disease [Ebola], there are signs of acute respiratory viral infection," Minister of Health of the Khabarovsk Territory Alexander Vitko told journalists.
According to the minister, the two were placed in an infectious diseases hospital in an isolation ward with a separate entrance.
According to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) data, the current Ebola outbreak has claimed the lives of more than 4,500 people, with a number of more than 9,200 confirmed, probable and suspected infection cases. There is no officially approved cure for the disease, but several countries are currently working on developing Ebola vaccines, with Russia planning to introduce three vaccines within the next six months.
