MOSCOW, October 19 (RIA Novosti) – Spanish officials have allowed the United States to use two military bases on Sunday to support efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, AP reported.
The agreement allows the US armed forces to the use the air base near Seville and the naval station at Rota in the southwest of the country as waypoints for the shipment of personnel and materials in and out of Africa, according to a Spanish Defense Ministry statement, as reported by AP.
Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenes met his American counterpart Chuck Hagel in Washington late on Saturday.
Earlier this week, both the UN and United States asked Spain for the ability to use the military bases as part of the international operation to fight the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, Kuwait News Agency informed.
Spanish officials are worried about the possibility of more Ebola cases in Spain. As a result, the US guaranteed that the use of military bases would not in any way contribute to the spread of the virus.
The worst Ebola outbreak in history has already killed over 4,500 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the three worst-hit countries, according to the latest World Health Organization (WHO) figures.
