In 2012, Marijuana was legalized for recreational use in 2 states. In 2014, it was legalized for recreational use in several more. However, anti-drug treaties have been a lynchpin of American foreign policy for more than 50 years. Is America in violation of its own anti-drug treaties?

On November 15, the first legal marijuana auction was held in a small town in Washington State. The auction saw the farmer sell hundreds of pounds of marijuana and approximately 600,000 USD legally exchanged hands. However, marijuana is still illegal according to US Federal laws. Even more troublesome, anti-drug treaties have been a lynchpin of American foreign policy for more than 50 years, when the US signed the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. This document pledged international cooperation to fight the spread of illegal drugs. Is America in violation of its own anti-drug treaties?
