MOSCOW, November 26 (Sputnik) — A married couple from Walsall, West Midlands (UK) was arrested at Heathrow Airport on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offenses, the British ITV television network reported Wednesday quoting West Midlands Police.
According to the police, a 20-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both from Walsall, were arrested at about 22:30 GMT Tuesday at Heathrow Airport, London as they stepped off a flight from Istanbul.
Police stressed that the flight was not in danger as the arrest was planned in advance.
The couple now remains in custody in the West Midlands.
According to British media, the couple planned to enter Syria, but only managed to get as far as Turkey before turning back.
This arrest comes less than a week after a 19-year-old from Coventry, West Midlands was held by police at Heathrow upon arrival from Jordan on suspicion of preparing for terror attacks.
British officials say at least 500 UK citizens have gone to Iraq and Syria in recent months to fight alongside the Islamic State, a Sunni extremist group,
also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) or the Islamic State and the Levant (ISIL). The Britons have been drawn through effective Islamic State propaganda especially designed to target young people. In August, the terror threat level in the United Kingdom from international terrorism was raised from substantial to severe amid concerns that Britons who had joined Islamic State militants in Syria could return and carry out an attack at home.
