WASHINGTON, December 2 (Sputnik) – Russian NHL Los Angeles Kings player Vyacheslav Voynov on Monday pleaded not guilty to domestic violence charges, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County district attorney told Sputnik Monday.
Voynov is scheduled to return to US court on December 15 for a preliminary hearing, Greg Risling added.
"Mr. Voynov is extremely disappointed that the District Attorney's office has elected to file charges," the hockey player's attorney Craig Renetzky said on his website. "Mr. Voynov maintains his innocence and looks forward to clearing his name in court."
Voynov's attorney said previously that the incident was a misunderstanding and any injuries of the woman involved were an accident. The lawyer claims police misinterpreted the situation due to language issues.
Los Angeles Kings defenseman Voynov was arrested in October, following an alleged domestic violence incident in Redondo Beach involving a Russian woman. Voynov was released on $50,000 bail and immediately given paid suspension from the National Hockey League.
