VIENNA, December 8 (Sputnik) — The fact of Washington and London sending their delegations to the Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons in the Austrian capital is already a significant success of the event, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz said Monday.
"For the first time, two members of the UN Security Council – the US and the UK – are participating, and it is already the first success of our conference," Kurz said.
Speaking at the opening of the conference, the minister stressed that whatever value is given to nuclear weapons, "they must be seen in the context of the risks and the possible humanitarian consequences."
Vienna is hosting the third Conference on the Humanitarian Consequences of Nuclear Weapons on December 8-9. The event is aimed at promotion of global nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regime. It is open to all states and interested parties, including representatives of the civil society.
