MOSCOW, December 8 (Sputnik) — Moscow condemns the terrorist attacks in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and believes that India and Pakistan should work together in the fight against terrorism, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Monday.
“Moscow strongly condemns the terrorist attack that took place on December 5 in the Uri sector of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of military personnel, police officers and civilians,” the statement read.
“The Kashmir attack once again underlines the need for coordinated action in New Delhi and Islamabad in the fight against international terrorism,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.
According to the ministry, the attack was clearly aimed at disrupting the upcoming state elections and “undermining the efforts of the Indian leadership and local authorities to establish peace and tranquility in Jammu and Kashmir”.
A terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri, an area in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir, took place in the early hours of Friday. The attack came few days ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the region, as well as the third phase of elections to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
