MOSCOW, December 10 (Sputnik) – The fight against Islamic State in Iraq has claimed lives of more than 700 Kurds since June 2014, according to data from the autonomous Kurdistan region, reported Al Jazeera.

According to the region’s officials, over 3,500 people were injured in the past six months. The devastating offensive was started by Islamic State members on June 9, when thousands of Iraqi Kurds were forced to defend their territories.

Among those killed and injured were "officers, non-commissioned officers, members of the Asayish (intelligence agency), of the police and some peshmerga veterans," said a statement published by the region’s military forces, cited Daily Mail.

On Wednesday, the deputy prime minister of the Kurdish regional administration, Qubad Talabani, called on the country’s authorities to delegate power to regions and include them in the decision-making process as a way to restore trust in Iraq’s diverse society and resolve the ongoing conflict.

Military conflict in Iraq has forced more than two million people to seek asylum abroad or flee to the regions, which were once considered relatively safe. The Kurdish region has received nearly one million displaced Iraqis coming from all across the country
