“This is a security breach for which we apologize. This should not have happened,” Oslo Police District inspector Johan Fredriksen told reporters following the incident.
Tuesday’s Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony held in Norway’s capital Oslo was interrupted when a young man waving a Mexican flag ran up on stage as the laureate Malala Yousafzai was about to receive her medal and diploma.
“A possible explanation of how he entered without a ticket is that he followed others who were passing [the checkpoint] and was not noticed by those who checked tickets and ID,” Fredriksen said.
According to a press statement issued by the local police, the man is a Mexican student who arrived in Norway in late November and applied for asylum on December 9.
Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai and Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize at Oslo City Hall on Wednesday for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.
