Suspected Killer of New York Policemen Had Criminal Record in Three States
MOSCOW, December 23 (Sputnik) — The fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a white police officer in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in April will be reviewed, the US Justice Department announced Monday, after local prosecutors had decided not to press charges against the policeman.

A federal investigation will seek to judge whether the civil rights of Dontre Hamilton, the victim of police shootings, were abused.

On Monday, the Milwaukee County District Attorney dropped charges on Christopher Manney, the police officer responsible for the shootings, defining his actions as self-defense.

On April 30, the police officer arrived in the park where Hamilton was sleeping and tried to frisk him. Manney claimed that he had to shoot Hamilton as the latter was resisting arrest and had punched the officer several times, according to media reports.

Hamilton's family said he was suffering from schizophrenia and has not been taking his medicine for some time, news outlets reported.

The prosecutors' decision not to charge Manney sparked protests in the city by religious and civil rights leaders on Monday. About 200 protesters demanded the review of the Hamilton's case.

Many high-profile protest actions relating to similar cases in which a white police officer has shot and killed an unarmed black man have taken place in the United States recently. The case of black teenager Michael Brown received widest media coverage.

The 18-year-old man was shot by police officer Darren Wilson in the city of Ferguson in August. The incident triggered mass protests across the country. A second wave of protests followed in November after a grand jury decision not to indict Wilson. Wilson quit his job and remains the subject of investigations.
