MEXICO, January 2 (Sputnik) — President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, during his meeting with US Vice President Joe Biden, has called on the United States to respect his country, Venezuelan Noticias24 news agency reported Friday.
Maduro had a meeting with Biden Thursday on the sidelines of the inauguration of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff.
"I told Biden that we have called on the United States a thousand times both in public and in private that we want relations of respect and nothing more," Maduro told journalists as quoted by Noticias24.
According to the Venezuelan leader, his meeting with US Vice President was of a cordial nature and was conducted in the atmosphere of mutual respect, which, as Maduro stressed, should prevail in the relations between the two countries in the future.
Maduro added that at the next summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) he will try to persuade the United States to lift it sanctions against Venezuelan individuals.
On December 19, US President Barack Obama approved sanctions targeting Venezuelan individuals who are allegedly responsible for human rights violations during February protests against President Maduro's government.
