MOSCOW, January 9 (Sputnik) – A powerful Atlantic winter storm with winds of over 100mph (160km/h) recorded in the Scottish Highlands and nearby islands has left more than 70,000 homes without electricity in Scotland, the BBC reported Friday.
Earlier in the day, Scotland's railway service announced a suspension of train services for an indefinite period of time.
"Due to the severity of the overnight storm, all ScotRail services are currently suspended to allow Network Rail to check [that] the lines are safe for trains to run," the company said in a statement.
On Thursday, the UK Meteorological Office issued weather warnings for the northern parts of the United Kingdom, predicting two Atlantic storms that would bring strong winds that could lead to transport disruption.
