A protest group called the Act Now to Stop War and End Racism Coalition (ANSWER) vowed to “flood the subways” with demonstrators carrying placards bearing such slogans as “Stop Racist Police Terror” and “Stop the War on Black America”.
“In the name of Mike Brown, Eric Garner and all the victims, take to the trains with your friends, speak out, lead chants against racism, pass out literature, and bring your signs,” organizers said in a statement. “It is legal to do so. Show the whole city and country. We will not be silent!”
Garner, 43, an overweight street peddler selling untaxed cigarettes, died from a chokehold by officer Daniel Pantaleo in New York on July 19. Brown, 18, was shot and killed by lawman Darren Wilson while walking down a leafy backstreet in Ferguson, Missouri, on August 9.
Several rallies have been organized over the weekend in the run-up to Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday that is being held on Monday, January 19 this year to mark the contributions of the slain 1960s civil rights activist.
