MOSCOW, January 26 (Sputnik) — The Mayor of Ukraine's Mariupol Yuriy Khotlubei announced January 26 and 27 days of mourning for those killed by Saturday shelling, the city's council said in a statement on Monday.
"In accordance with the order of the mayor Yuriy Khotlubei, January 26 and 27 are declared in Mariupol days of mourning for those killed by the shelling in Vostochniy district [of the city]," the statement said.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko earlier declared January 25 a day of national mourning for the dead.
Despite the ceasefire agreement reached by the warring sides in September 2014, and a subsequent "silence regime" proclaimed in early December, violence in eastern Ukraine surged in January, with fighting in the Donetsk region intensifying.
On January 24, the city of Mariupol was attacked with Grad and Uragan multiple-rocket launchers, with the Kiev troops and the Donbas militia placing the blame for the incident on each other.
