Ongwen is charged with four war crimes and three crimes against humanity, including allegations of murder and enslavement committed in 2004 in Uganda.

"During the initial appearance hearing, the single Judge will verify the identity of the suspect and the language in which he is able to follow the proceedings. He will be informed of the charges against him," the ICC statement read.
Ongwen is the first LRA commander to be tried in the ICC. He was arrested after surrendering in the Central African Republic (CAR) last month.
The Lord's Resistance Army is an extremist Christian rebel group founded in 1980s in northern Uganda. The organization later expanded its activity to the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and the CAR. The group is known for its human rights atrocities, including abduction, recruiting children and sex slavery.
